Inauspicious, dreary, and showing a transcendently sloppy variety sense of taste — all greens, grays, tans — as well as a mental meltdown of a score by Robert Pycior, Vincent Grashaw’s “What Josiah Saw” is an intense watch. Cinematographer Carlos Ritter makes the dreadful state of mind: bunches of slow camera moves, detached shots of void rooms, foggy light scarcely ready to endure the window sheets. It gives a frightful feeling of vacancy going to be filled by something horrendous. The ignobility is more ailing than anything conjured up by Flannery O’Connor. Scratch Stahl, specifically, is awesome. I’ve been a fan since his shaking scared high school execution in the unreasonably neglected (and elusive) “Eye of God.” Stahl has experienced a ton, and it shows all over: it’s carved with difficulty, responsiveness and torment.
